Bob pulled his hat low over his brow and kept his head down, trying to blend in as he walked along the pier of the Coldwater Cove marina. He loved the salty brine smell of the ocean, reminding him of when he was a kid. The squawk of gulls, the rumble of boat engines and the low horn of the ferry greeted him like an old friend. But he wasn’t here to turn nostalgic. He was here to do a job. He’d been back for a couple of weeks, poking around to see what he could find out. It had been ten years since he’d worked Elizabeth Buchanan’s murder case, yet it still felt like yesterday.

He’d felt like shit turning Stacy down when she asked him for help. She’d given him the lead he had waited so long for, but he’d let fear of failure stop him from putting this case to rest once and for all. He’d changed his mind almost immediately, but he hadn’t told her. The less she knew the better, but damn it felt good feeling useful again. Like he had purpose, even though the powers that be would throw him in jail if they got wind of what he was up to.

Years ago he’d been on a task force looking into her mother’s affairs. The mayor’s office was under suspicion for missing funds from some of its programs, but her mother wasn’t the only one under suspicion. Her father’s fishing boat had been suspected of being involved in illegal activity, but the FBI hadn’t been able to prove it.

Stacy said someone was blackmailing her mother. Maybe they had found out what had happened to the missing money that caused the discrepancies in the books and threatened to expose her. Or maybe her mother had been overlooking her father’s illegal activities and someone threatened to expose that. Or, worse case scenario, her mother had found out about her father’s illegal doings, and he killed her to keep her quiet.

Admittedly, that seemed crazy, but in his line of work, Bob had seen all sorts of things that didn’t make sense and were hard to believe. Anything was possible. He had learned to be objective, keep an open mind and expect the worst. Bob would find out what really happened to Elizabeth for his own sake as well as Stacy’s. He owed it to her, but she might get more than she bargained for. She would get closure, all right, but the question was….

Could she handle the truth?

There wasn’t a cloud in the sky as the sun was setting over the harbor, the orange and red ball casting a fiery glow over the dark water with the promise of a beautiful day tomorrow. A fisherman’s delight. Inhaling a deep breath, the smell of salt and fish and pine trees filled his senses. He loved the ocean and had grown up around boats before entering the FBI, leaving his brother behind to help their father in the shipbuilding business, but that didn’t mean he didn’t know everything there was to know about boats.
